Equifax Security Breach…

Equifax Security Breach 2017

Was your information comprised? Here's how you can find out!

Roughly 143 million Americans just had all or some of their personal information stolen by hackers who targeted consumer credit bureau Equifax... In order to find out if your information was among that which was compromised, you'll first want to go to the website that Equifax has set up about the breach, called Equifax security 2017.   This will let you know if your data was compromised, and to what extent.
The next thing that you'll want to do is go to each of the three credit bureaus and place a security freeze on your credit reports. But be advised, this is not the same thing as a fraud alert.  A credit bureau security freeze will lock down most access to your credit report.  (Not to worry, you can always go online and remove the security freeze when you're ready to apply for credit in the future.) Contrary to popular belief, placing a security freeze on your credit reports will not impact your credit score.  We have included links to each of the bureaus where you can place those security freezes.
Third, we would suggest that you go to the  opt-out prescreen website and enroll there as well.  The opt-out prescreen prevents the three major credit bureaus from selling your personal information to companies that want to include you in credit offers made by mail, and eliminates promotional inquiries into your credit.  The opt-out can be done for a 5 year period online, or permanently, if done by mail. The following is a link to the Opt-Out PreScreen website.
Finally, you'll want to be on the lookout for "phishing" attempts.  When a major breach like this takes place, unscrupulous hackers will try to get your personal and sensitive information, even if they were not part of the original breach.  Use extreme caution if you receive a phone call or email from anyone alleging to be one of your creditors or banks, especially if they are asking for personal information.  It's generally best to get their information, and contact your creditor or bank through one of the  channels you typically use.
